BRAZIL AND THE AMAZON
RAINFOREST
WHY THE AMAZON?
The Brazilian Amazon doesn’t have shopping malls with air conditioning, or restaurants with a room temperature of 70º F/20º C, but the world’s biggest forest offers unique and spectacular features.
No one can be indifferent to the croaks of the frogs and toads at night, to the chant of the monkeys in the forest before evening storms, or to the brutality of these same storms and the way they interact with the forest trees; no one can be indifferent to the unbelievable immense green and to the web of life and water sensed everywhere. Part of our ancestral roots as human beings is there, in the tropics, in places as the Amazon rain forest. Personally, I always feel an intense sense of smallness, of wonder, and yet a calm familiarity.
HOW TO VISIT THE BRAZILIAN
AMAZON RAINFOREST?Manaus – 1000 miles/1600 kms upstream the river mouth, at the very heart of the Amazon basin - is the major reference for visiting the Amazon rainforest.
Most touristic visits are centred in Manaus and last for two or three days. They usually include trips to an ecological park, canoeing on the river and lakes, visits to giant water lilies and observation of the «meeting of the waters». They can also include fishing, swimming, exploring forest treks, or visits to the «caboclos» settlements.
A stay of six or more days in Manaus region is not too much, if you are a nature lover.
