There are many budget and discount hotels and in Rio de Janeiro. The main difficulty is to choose. Dec-Feb. is the high season, and the hotel prices rise strongly.
One possible criterion of choice is the hotel location. Very cheap hotels mean, normally, an unfavourable location in the city. About the location issue remember the following:
Copacabana is the big reference in animation and shopping; many budget hotels are in Copacabana, just some blocks from the main front.
Ipanema hasn’t the intensity of Copacabana, but it is more secure and has a romantic charm of its own.
Barra da Tijuca is a Rio’s quarter some miles from the center and Copacabana, though with a reasonable animation and beach life.
Leme and Flamengo are central quarters, not far from Copacabana or Ipanema, but without the beach life of the first two.
Nightlife and the gay streets and quarters are located between Leme and Ipanema.
Downtown hotels can be an option for business and other events.
