Best time to visit Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre has a temperate climate with reasonably defined four seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter), quite different from northern Brazilian regions.

The months from November to the end of April are the hottest and driest of the year (includes the Summer). That’s also the time with the best sea water temperatures (they can raise to 75ºF-24ºC).

Cold temperatures should be taken into account in the winter months (June to September); the average low temperatures dip to 50ºF/10ºC, but there are days when temperatures are close to the freezing point. Winter precipitation can also be significant and last for days.

Sea water temperature also decreases significantly in the winter months: to around 60ºF/16ºC during some periods.

As expected, Spring (September-November) and Autumn (April-June) weather has mixed patterns. There are pleasant days, but the weather is rather unsettled and unpredictable, especially in the weeks closer to the winter (see graphs below for monthly data on rain, humidity and air temperatures).

As expected from the elements mentioned above, the hottest and driest months (November to March) are also the best time to visit Porto Alegre and south of Brazil: it rains less, high air temperatures are pleasant (average around: 86ºF/30ºC), sea water temperatures are higher, and there is more entertainment and fun opportunities in the area as well as in other cities north of Porto Alegre (or in Argentina or Uruguay). Obviously that’s also the most crowded time, and the one with the most expensive hotel prices (many Argentinians use to come to Brazil at this time).,
