Samba is rooted in the African culture and musical practices of ancient African slaves and their descendents, since it is intrinsically connected with the dances (umbigadas), and the batuques - the sounds of percussion instruments - of these people. But, for many experts, besides this predominant influence, there is also the influence of some colonial and native Indian music.
